Calvo & Clark Represents KUAM in Freedom of the Press Suit Against Guam Police

May 24, 2010

Lawyers at Calvo & Clark are representing KUAM, the NBC affiliate on Guam, in the television station’s lawsuit against the Guam Police Department for an illegal search of the station on May 11, 2010 that was seeking a single piece of paper used in a newscast. The suit filed in Guam Superior Court seeks to quash the search warrant and return the document taken in the raid and asks for damages under the federal Privacy Protection Act.

The Associated Press covered the filing of the lawsuit and there has been extensive coverage of the incident and its aftermath by the press in Guam where major national press trade organizations have been voicing their support for KUAM. Organizations that have spoken out so far include The Society of Professional Journalists, Associated Press Managing Editors, Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Radio Television Digital News Association, and the Asian American Journalists Association. KUAM’s own statement about the incident is available here.
