Mr. Calvo represents regional and U.S. clients, as well as Japanese, Korean, Filipino and other Asian companies, in transactional and litigation matters in Guam and around the Pacific Rim.  Mr. Calvo has extensive experience representing clients in major international and regional transactional business matters, including finance, licensing and construction as well as hotel, golf course and other commercial developments.  His practice also involves complex cross-border litigation, arbitration and mediation, with special emphasis on matters involving fiduciary duty and breach of trust.  Over the course of his career, he has played a major role in several high-stakes international litigation cases.

Admitted to practice in Guam and Hawaii, Mr. Calvo served as Associate Justice (part-time from 1996 to 1998) on the first panel of justices of the Supreme Court of Guam.  He was a partner in the firm of Carlsmith Ball until he left to establish Calvo & Clark, now known as Calvo Jacob & Pangelinan, in 1992.

Mr. Calvo has served as a director on a wide range of corporate and government entity boards and community organizations.  He has been a member of the board of directors of Bank of Hawaii (1997-2002), First Savings & Loan Association (1997-2002), and Title Guaranty of Guam (1994 to 2002).  He served as member of the board of directors of GIAA (1990-1994); as a member of the Governor’s Council of Economic Advisors (1996-1998); as Chairman of the Guam Real Estate Commission (1989-1994); as a member of the board of directors of the United Micronesia Development Association (UMDA) (2004-present); as Chairman of the board of directors of Calvo’s Insurance Underwriters, Inc. (2004-present); as a member of the board of directors of  The Guam Museum Foundation, Inc. (2007-2012); and as a member of the board of directors of the Guam Visitors’ Bureau (2011-present); as a member of the Father Dueñas Memorial School Advisory Board (1/2016 – Present).  Mr. Calvo is also a member of the E.C. Development Group, LLC, a Guam development and investment company.

Mr. Calvo is a native of Guam.  He received his B.A. degree magna cum laude in 1978 from Menlo College School of Business Administration and his J.D. degree in 1981 from University of Santa Clara School of Law.

Representative Matters

  • Counsel to the probate estate of the late Larry L. Hillblom, founder of DHL, which included the administration, liquidation, and distribution of hundreds of millions of dollars in worldwide assets
  • Led the team representing the Japanese bankruptcy trustee for EIE International, a failed real estate developer, against Shinsei Bank in a matter that involved proceedings in Saipan, Guam, California, and Tokyo and culminated in a $200 million settlement for the firm’s client
  • Extensive experience representing U.S. and Asian companies in the development of high-profile hotel, golf courses, and resort properties in the Pacific island region, including the Hyatt Regency Guam Hotel
  • While counsel to the Guam International Airport Authority from 1990 to 1994 handled various transactions that funded large capital improvements on Guam
